D.D.-DOMESTICA DOVE is a work in two parts, 13 breads and the picture of a dead bird. The baker’s dozen is a practice that appeared in the 13th century, under a law regulating the weight of bread given to the church. The baker’s dozen was meant to limit the power of bakers by obliging them make at least twelve loaves of the regulated weight.

To avoid penalties in case of a mistake during baking, the tradition was kept of making one and sometimes two extra loaves. Therefore the ‘dozen’ either means 13 or 14. The poured concrete loaves were taken from the surplus of a Dutch baker before closing, being thrown away or given to the nearby church. This charity bread was multiplied, poured several times into the same molds.

The concrete stale breads are placed facing the pictures of a dead city pigeon - a domestica dove.
